Supplemental Training- The Overhead Deep Squat

The Overhead Deep Squat

As a runner, triathlete, golfer, or any sport participant you may want to participate in supplemental training.  Supplemental training includes some weight training, core work, stretching and mobility exercises. During the competition phase of a sport, supplemental training takes place only 1 or 2 time a week, if at all.  During the off season it could occur 3 to 5 times per week.  One goal of supplemental training is to make the body more resilient to injury and improve your ability to adapt and sustain higher levels of training. Having perfected the overhead deep squat is essential to your supplemental training.

Squats help build glutes, quad, hamstring, and core strength.  When you have a prefect overhead deep squat you have optimal ankle, knee, hip, spine and shoulder mobility.  If you have ever sustained runners knee, ITB syndrome, perhaps a hip or lower back injury, one of your home exercises may have been a squat or a form of a squat. This is because strengthening your glutes, and improving the range of motion in the hips, knees and ankles can help to reduce your pain.
